are available for all workshops.
Workshops have
included: book arts, nature crafts, pottery, drawing & painting, film
and video, printmaking, basketry, textile arts, found object construction,

2011 Summer Workshop Schedule
Childrens classes meet from 9AM-12PM, and 1PM-4PM at the Seamark Building, 11 Church St., 2nd Floor, Deer Isle, Maine unless otherwise noted
Workshops for Kids
Note: All Workshops for Kids are geared torward children ages 6 and older. A mid-morning/afternoon snack will be provided. Bring a bag lunch if your child is registered for a full day of classes.

Explore 2 Cultures from Africa thru Stories, Drama Games, Music, Costumes & Art
Aug. 2, 3, & 4: 3 Mornings, 9 AM Noon
Fee for residents: $45
Fee for non-residents: $75
Using Kelly's picture books for the stories, kids will have fun with acting games, drawing cultural artifacts and wearing traditional clothes. Each day shifts toward the actual final production, acting out the stories while gaining confidence with voice, expression and coordination. MALAFA is about the Sahara Muslim culture; FOR YOU ARE A KENYAN CHILD and CHIRCHIR IS SINGING both take place in a Kenyan village.

Art & Drama with Kelly
Aug. 2, 3, & 4: 3 Afternoons, 1 4 PM
Fee for residents: $45

Drama relays and games. Group and individual character development. Setting up a play and acting it out.

Printmaking Capers
Aug. 9, 10, & 11: 3 Mornings, 9 AM Noon

Printmaking is a world of fun on and off the etching press. Your individual style of drawings and collage will be transformed into rubbings, embossing, collagraphs, block prints and monoprints. Come and explore the possibilities.

Basket Weaving
Aug. 9 & 11: 2 Afternoons, 1 4 PM
Fee for residents: $25
Fee for non-residents: $50
Come weave a simple, yet useful basket using reed. Learn about other ways to have fun weaving with different materials at home.

Creative Wearable Art from Feathers to Duct Tape
Aug. 16, 17, & 18: 3 Mornings, 9 AM Noon
Fee for residents: $45
Fee for non-residents: $75
Cool and crazy bags and bracelets of duct tape. We will be making colorful purses (and tote bags and bracelets) from decorative ducts tape. Hair extensions and headbands of feathers and beads.

1. All children whose PRIMARY RESIDENCE is on the Blue Hill Penisula qualify for the discounted fee.
2. Nonresidents enrolling more than one child may take 10% off.
3. All fees for children’s workshops include the cost of materials.
PLEASE NOTE: There is limited discounted seating available per class, so early registration is stongly encouraged.
Workshops for Families, Teens & Adults of all abilities
Note: The following workshops will be offered in the studios of the artists/craftsmen that are teaching. You will learn to use their tools in their space, as well as produce a product. The adult-helping-a-child method of learning is a wonderful experience for both parties, as well as a safety aspect. We offer a 10% discount for families.
Basics of Forging
July 28 & 29: 2 Days: 9 AM 1 PM (Rain Date July 29 & 30)
Fee: $150/pair (adult/child), $100/individual (Ages 16 & up), plus materials
Learn the basics of forging while making a doorknocker with local artist/craftsman Farrell Ruppert at his forge. Limit: 8 students .

Plein Air Painting Deer Isle-Style
Aug. 2 & 4: 2 Days: 9 AM Noon
Fee: $75 Teens, $125 Adults. Ages 14 & up.
This is a rare opportunity to paint with and get some pointers from one of Deer Isle's most experienced plein air painters. Acrylic, watercolors, or gouache. Open to all levels of experience. Materials list offered at registration. Limit: 8 students .

Build a Bench or Box
Aug. 8 & 10: 2 Days: 9 AM 1 PM
Fee: $100, plus materials. Ages 12 & up, or adult & child.
You will design and construct a useful bench or box using mostly hand tools, in a fully equipped wood shop, with a master furniture maker. Limit: 6 students .

Location: Seamark Woodshop (Seamark Building), 11 Church St., 1st Floor, Deer Isle Village.
Pinhole Camera Magic
Aug. 16 & 18: 2 Days: 9 AM 1 PM
Fee: $100, plus materials. All Ages.
This workshop provides an excellent introduction to photography and darkroom practices. It also invites a spirit of adventure and experimentation. Each student will build several cameras from ordinary boxes which will yield beautiful soft-focus images and surprising special effects. Color can be added by hand and students will make small book models, showcasing the photographs. Limit: 4 students .
