Seamark Community Arts offers fun and creative arts workshops for children and adults throughout the year.

Scholarships are available for all workshops.

Workshops have included: book arts, nature crafts, pottery, drawing & painting, film and video, printmaking, basketry, textile arts, found object construction, music & drama, seasonal crafts.

Classes meet from 9AM-12PM at Seamark Building in Deer Isle, Maine unless otherwise noted


Workshops for Kids 6 and Older

Note: All Workshops for Kids consist of two half-day morning sessions that run on Tuesday/Thursday of each week and include a mid-morning snack. The workshops are geared for children ages 6 and older unless otherwise specified. A minimum of 6 registered children are needed to run each class. Limit 12 children per class.

Garden Mosaics
July 14 & 16 2 Days: 9 AM – Noon
Fee/Materials:$35*/$5

Bring along those sea shells, stones, sea glass, and charms, and we’ll provide the materials to turn a clay flowerpot into a garden masterpiece. We will design our pots, glue tiles, and learn the finishing touches of grouting and polishing. Children are invited to bring in small objects or materials that are special to them and we will help them create a garden mosaic they can treasure for years to come!

Magical Mobiles
July 21 & 23 2 Days: 9 AM – Noon

Learn to balance a medium of your choice into a floating art. Using paper, natural and recycled materials and more, learn to create your very own 3-D sculpture that moves!

Paper Construction
July 28 & 30 2 Days: 9 AM – Noon
Fee/Materials:$35*/$0

We will make our own paper people, furniture and buildings using traditional and recycled materials to recreate the pictures of our life: family, home, pets, etc. Based on the work of folk artist James Castle, we will explore pictures of Mr. Castle’s work and learn some of the techniques he used to create his art. We will try using these techniques to create our own paper worlds in both 2-D and 3-D.

Animal Masks
August 4 & 6 2 Days: 9 AM – Noon
Fee/Materials:$35/$5

Using paper mache, cardboard, tinfoil, sparkles, colors and textures galore, we will recreate animals to fit our faces. We will choose our own animals and create masks that can last for the moments when our inner animals need to come play!

Beginning Sewing (Ages 9 & Older)
August 10 & 12 2 Days: 9 AM – Noon
Fee/Materials:$65*/$7

We will learn about cutting, pinning, construction and using a sewing machine while making a special strip-pieced pillow for your bedroom. Minimum: 4 registered students. Limit: 6 students.

Batik
August 11 & 13 2 Days: 9 AM – Noon
Fee/Materials:$35/$5

ing technique from Indonesia and West Africa. We will examine some traditional patterns and colors before beginning. Wear old clothes and come have fun learning this ancient Indonesian art. Bring your own blank T-shirt to dye if you like (optional). PARENTAL NOTE: hot wax is used during this class and children should be mature enough to exercise care when handling.

Book Making & Journaling
August 18 & 20 2 Days: 9 AM – Noon
Fee/Materials:$35/$5

We will explore a variety of easy book making techniques that will allow you to recreate books for presents and projects forever! Upon completion, we will explore the many ways we can express our ideas on paper. We will create art by sketching, painting, stamping, using color, or collage and using words and poetry to adorn these special pages.

FAMILY DISCOUNTS FOR CHILDREN’S WORKSHOPS

1. If child’s PRIMARY RESIDENCE is on the Blue Hill Pennisula, enrollment is half price plus materials fees ($17.50 + materials fees).

2. Register one child at full price ($35.00 + materials fees) and enroll a sibling at half price ($17.50 + materials fees).

PLEASE NOTE: There is limited discounted seating available per class, so early registration is stongly encouraged. Family discounts do not include materials fees.


Workshops for Adults

Introduction to Stained Glass (Beginner)
June 19-20, July 16-17, or July 30-31 2 Days: Day 1: 9 AM – 4 PM
Fee/Materials:$130/$30 Day 2: 9 AM - Noon

Class begins with an overview of stained glass as a craft and art form, and then follows with information on materials, construction methods, color, and proper use of tools. Everyone will construct their own stained glass panel (window) using either copper foil or lead. Students learn to cut glass, work with zinc, lead, and copper foil, solder, and prepare and apply grout. Bring box lunch to class; drinks will be provided. Students who take class qualify for 10% discount at Stained Glass Express, Waterville, Maine. Minimum: 3 students. Limit: 6 students per class.

Botanical Drawing & Landscapes with Watercolors (Beginner & Above)
July 22, 1 Day: 10 AM – 4 PM
Fee/Materials:$75/$10

Students will explore the metaphor of life in the landscape by drawing what we see using watercolor pencils and paints. We will focus on nature’s beauty, however grand or intricate, and express our ideas through these two very different mediums. Capture the beauty of Maine’s summer flora and fauna at its peak! We will meet at Seamark and work outside on location weather permitting. Bring a box lunch and drink to class. Minimum: 3 students. Limit: 6 students.

Painting Intuitively (Beginner & Above)
August 3 & 5 2 Days: 9 AM – Noon
Fee/Materials: $ 75/$20

This workshop is geared toward tapping into the wealth of creativity that lies within each of us. Explore painting through a more personal approach using memory as a point of departure. Participants will allow their instincts and personal sensibilities to guide them to view unintentional occurances as opportunities and discover new possibilities between rational decision-making vs. intuitive responses. Minimum: 3 students. Limit: 8 students.

Indian Summer Workshops for Adults

Postcards from Maine (Intermediate & Above)
September 19 & 26, 2 Days: 1 – 4 PM
Fee/Materials: $75/$10

Students with some experience working with pastels will work outside on location on small 4 x 6 inch panels (postcard size) textured with a slight grit to hold the color in subtle layers. We will use the beauty of the local seascape/landscape as our subject matter. Students are encouraged to bring their own pastels to class (extras will be available). Suggested materials: a combination of hard pastels (i.e. Nu-Pastels), pastel pencils, psoft sticks, and a portable chair. Minimum: 3 students. Limit: 6 students .

Wood Block Relief Printmaking
October 3 & 10, 2 Days: 10 AM – 3 PM
Fee/Materials: $85/$30

Using plain wood pine blocks, students will practice cutting into wood, carving out shapes and gouging out the negative spaces (the areas not printed in ink) using various types of tools to create a design. We will explore printing processes, methods of pulling a print and the various ways to complete a woodcut print. Students will print multiple copies, limiting color to black and white, using the relief printmaking method. If time allows, presentation of prints will be discussed. Bring box lunch to class. Minimum: 5 students. Limit: 10 students.
